As in any undertaking, the initial stages require thorough research and development. PGMPI searched for materials nationwide from existing small-scale mining areas and large-scale mining operations to legacy mining areas.  

PGMPI started initially in the Davao region, which is known to be rich in PGMs and REEs—following where the initial results and projected revenues from different sample areas were computed from the price of metals at the time.

Extensive research was made on materials from Davao de Oro mining areas, river networks, and abandoned mine tailings in the vicinity of Tagum, Nabumturan, Maco, and Moncayo areas. These materials were tested and compared with ores gathered in Surigao, Agusan, Bukidnon, and even as far west as Zamboanga del Norte and south in Tawi Tawi. 

As materials turned out to be very promising, most of these materials were sent to Emak Laboratory in Izmir, Turkey for confirmatory laboratory tests. After a tedious process, the results were finally made available and confirmed the presence of these minerals and metals in the ores.
